about

MA002

As machines take our jobs and do them more efficiently, soon the only work left for us humans will be the kind that must be done beautifully rather than efficiently. Both efficiency and beauty are certainly in Hal's repertoire as demonstrated in his debut EP, Working With Machines, bringing forth the flames with four tracks each carrying its own twisted personality.

Skin Friction encapsulates Hal’s unique take on dancehall, navigating through aggressive yet intricate beats carried by agitated bass hooks. The result is a furious body-shaking groover, perfectly positioned to both heat up the dance and immerse the attentive listener.

The glitched out X-1 then follows, bringing with it a shift in mood but no loss of energy. Its jittery textures are freed by ample space, giving the track room to flip and charge like a crazed animal released from a cage – an animal with the claws of Oli XL and the teeth of Beatrice Dillon.

Hypersonic Joy Ride is frantic and disjointed, yet carries a sense of urgency. Hal never lets the track settle, consistently contorting and shifting the rhythms for a 4 minute white knuckle ride. Ye who brace the rapids shall be rewarded with an unexpectedly weighty conclusion.

The slick downtempo grooves of 7090 conclude the EP in style, providing heavyweight dubbed out textures that are as much an ode to Rhythm & Sound as they are to the eskibeat sound of grime yesteryear.

A fierce debut from the Manchester based producer, who is clearly on a mission to get your body shifting in ways you never thought imaginable.
